Brussels alerts Member States to the impact of a dry and hot summer on agriculture

Now2 September 2026 at 15:15

The European Commission warned Member States about the impact that a dry and hot summer may have on European agriculture. The warning comes at a time of growing concern about adverse weather conditions affecting various regions of the Union.

The financial reserve for agricultural crisis situations for 2026 is already empty, which limits the European Union's options for immediate response to potential emergencies in the agricultural sector.

Given this situation, Brussels did not promise additional funds at this stage, indicating that it does not intend to make decisions about extraordinary support until the assessment of the situation is more advanced.

The alert follows particularly difficult climatic conditions that have been affecting various European agricultural areas, with emphasis on the lack of rain and high temperatures recorded in recent months.

Portugal and Extremadura agreed to deepen coordination of new road links between the two countries, after a meeting in Lisbon between the Secretary of State for Infrastructure and the adviser from the Extremadura Regional Government. Portugal confirmed that the high-capacity connection between Castelo Branco and the Spanish border via IC31 is a national strategic priority, while Extremadura intends to extend the EX-A1 highway to the Portuguese border. Both sides will study financing mechanisms to coordinate construction schedules, avoiding infrastructure from one country lacking continuity on the other. The meeting also advanced plans for a new international bridge over the Erges River, which should be presented at the next Luso-Spanish Summit, and addressed the development of high-speed rail between Lisbon and Caia, with a target horizon of 2034.
