Between May 1 and August 31, 2024, 22 people died on Portuguese beaches. This number is already higher than the total recorded during the entire bathing season of the previous year, which is worrying authorities.
Several more hot days are forecast, meaning many people are expected to continue visiting Portuguese beaches in the coming weeks. This situation keeps the risk of accidents high.
Authorities are reinforcing the importance of swimmers choosing beach areas patrolled by lifeguards. This recommendation comes as a way to try to reduce the number of deaths on beaches during the remaining summer period.
