Eleven districts under yellow warning due to hot weather until Friday

Diário de Leiria2 September 2026 at 12:30

Eleven districts in mainland Portugal are under yellow warning due to hot weather, with the measure to remain in place until Friday. The warning mainly covers regions in the interior North and Centre of the country, where high temperatures are expected during this period.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued this weather warning to alert the population to extreme heat conditions. The yellow warning is the third most severe level on a three-level scale and indicates a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

The risk of rural fire will increase significantly in the interior North and Centre regions during this heat period. The high temperatures combined with the dryness of vegetation create favorable conditions for the occurrence and spread of fires in these areas.

Authorities recommend increased caution for the population in these regions, especially in outdoor activities that may pose an ignition risk. This situation arises in a context of growing concerns regarding the prevention of forest fires in Portugal.
