New housing loans hit record €2.3 billion in July

Expresso2 September 2026 at 12:44

In July, Portuguese families requested a historic 2.3 billion euros in new housing loans from banks, setting a new record. This figure represents a significant increase compared to previous months and demonstrates the intense demand for home purchases in the Portuguese market.

The average monthly installment associated with these loans rose to 441 euros, reflecting both the increase in the total value of credits granted and current real estate market conditions. This amount represents a considerable weight on family budgets.

The growth in housing credit demand occurs in a context of property appreciation and interest rates that have influenced the total cost of loans. The Portuguese real estate market has maintained a sustained growth dynamic over recent months.

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day, with yields hitting multi-year highs in several countries. In Germany, ten-year bunds reached 3.375% (highest since 2011), ten-year Japanese bonds remained above 3% for the first time in 31 years, US Treasury bonds remained above 4.8%, and ten-year British gilts renewed 2008 highs at 5.294%. In Portugal, ten-year bonds reached 3.747%, setting new highs since 2023, although the country benefits from debt reduction and fiscal correction. The renewed conflict in the Middle East, with new exchanges of fire between Americans and Iranians in Hormuz, should worsen inflation and lead Western central banks to new rate hikes.
