Metro Mondego exceeds two million validations since January

Campeão das Províncias2 September 2026 at 12:30

Metro Mondego exceeded two million validations on Tuesday since the start of commercial operation in January, according to a source from the company to the Lus news agency. The Metrobus system currently serves the municipalities of Lousã and Miranda do Corvo and part of the planned route for Coimbra, at a time when the network is not yet operating at full capacity.

May was the month with highest demand, with 313,807 validations, followed by a reduction in the summer months, with approximately 282 thousand in June, 261 thousand in July and 207 thousand in August. The daily maximum occurred on May 22nd, with 13,444 validations. The average of around 10 thousand passengers per day recorded in May would correspond to approximately 3.6 million passengers per year, which represents about 28% of the estimate of 13 million annual validations when the system is operating across the entire network.

The operation began on a section between Vale das Flores and Portagem and, in December 2025, it also started covering Lousã and Miranda do Corvo. On the 10th, the operation should be extended to Coimbra-B and Praça da República, with the full network expected to be operational at the end of the first quarter of 2027, with the completion of the line between Praça da República and the Pediatric Hospital, also serving the Coimbra University Hospitals.

The Mondego Mobility System uses electric buses on dedicated lanes and integrates a suburban operation, between Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo and Lousã, and an urban operation in the city of Coimbra. The Metrobus project represents an investment of at least 327 million euros, including studies, administrative expenses, construction works and alternative services provided to populations affected by the closure of the former railway branch line.

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day

Inflation fears continue to pressure sovereign debt for the second consecutive day, with yields hitting multi-year highs in several countries. In Germany, ten-year bunds reached 3.375% (highest since 2011), ten-year Japanese bonds remained above 3% for the first time in 31 years, US Treasury bonds remained above 4.8%, and ten-year British gilts renewed 2008 highs at 5.294%. In Portugal, ten-year bonds reached 3.747%, setting new highs since 2023, although the country benefits from debt reduction and fiscal correction. The renewed conflict in the Middle East, with new exchanges of fire between Americans and Iranians in Hormuz, should worsen inflation and lead Western central banks to new rate hikes.

Founded in 1971 in the United States, the brand has been present in Portugal since the early 1990s.
