Fishing waste from the United States and Canada crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Azores coast. The labels found on plastic waste allowed researchers to trace the path of part of the marine litter found on these islands.
The waste was identified on the islands of Faial and Pico, where researchers collected and analyzed the materials found on the beaches. Through the labels on the plastic objects, it was possible to trace the origin of the waste back to the United States and Canada.
This case demonstrates how marine litter can travel long distances through ocean currents, affecting even remote regions like the Azores archipelago, located in the middle of the North Atlantic.
