Montalegre deserved to continue in the Portuguese Cup

A Voz de Trás-os-Montes2 September 2026 at 11:50

Montalegre were eliminated from the Portuguese Cup in a tie decided by penalties. The home team had more goal-scoring opportunities during regular time and extra time, but couldn't convert them. Barrosões were superior in the first half, while Ponte da Barca balanced the match in the second half. In the penalties, the Minhotos were more effective.

The match took place with a great atmosphere in Montalegre, with a large crowd supporting both teams. The home side started the match better and created excellent opportunities to go into halftime with a lead. Captain Diogo Carvalho wasted the first big chance at 10 minutes, shooting wide of the right post. Five minutes later, Mário Borges also missed the target in a play on the left.

The home team continued to dominate and at 26 minutes threatened the opposition goal again, with Rodrigo Silva's header over the crossbar after a good cross from Sadidi. Montalegre was showing high-level football, but the goal was missing. At 40 minutes, Tiago Correia shot hard and goalkeeper João made a difficult save for a corner.

Sporting's coach, Rui Borges, was present at the match to watch his son Mário Borges in action. Additionally, Rui Borges ended up winning the CDC Montalegre jersey draw.

The young Portuguese international defender, who had a contract until 2029, saw his contract extended after the encarnada board rejected approaches from top clubs in La Liga and the Premier League. The decision to proceed with the renewal was linked to the player's development and the growing role he began to play in the team, as well as the salary situation, since Tomás Araújo was among the lowest-paid players in the squad.
