From Cueva Santa to Ermita de les Santes, sacred heritage as a target for thieves in Castellón

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General2 September 2026 at 11:15

Thefts from churches, hermitages and sacristies in the province of Castellón have been increasing, causing desolation, commotion and anger in local communities. Places like Cueva Santa and Ermita de les Santes have become targets for thieves, who seek objects of heritage and religious value. Ecclesiastical authorities have attempted to implement measures to protect these sacred spaces in the face of this wave of criminality.

After the major robbery that occurred at the Villena Museum the previous week, ecclesiastical authorities acted again in an attempt to curb this trend. A public appeal was made for security efforts to be doubled, asking religious communities to be more vigilant.

The measures include reviewing existing security systems in temples and implementing new strategies for the protection of sacred heritage. Authorities are working together with parishes to identify vulnerabilities and reinforce the protection of the most valuable assets. This situation highlights the vulnerability of religious spaces in the face of organized crime that targets cultural and religious heritage.
