A Stomatology surgical team from Hospital de Aveiro performed, for the first time at that unit, a surgically assisted maxillary expansion. The intervention was conducted by clinicians Pedro Ferraz, Joana Barata Paiva and Rodrigo Azevedo, using a minimally invasive technique that uses piezoelectric surgery, allowing bone osteotomies to be performed precisely and in a controlled manner, seeking to minimize trauma to adjacent tissues.
According to the statement from the Local Health Unit of the Aveiro Region (ULS RA), surgically assisted maxillary expansion is indicated, namely in adult patients with transverse deficiencies of the upper jaw, particularly in cases where exclusively orthodontic expansion is not sufficient to achieve the intended skeletal correction.
ULS RA classifies the procedure as an important milestone for the surgical activity of the Stomatology specialty at Hospital de Aveiro, reinforcing the differentiated capacity of the team and the commitment to implementing modern and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
The institution concludes that the procedure reflects the Service's commitment to innovation, technical differentiation and continuous improvement of care provided to patients.
