Environment Minister, Maria da Graça Carvalho, admitted that the Volta System, a bottle and can deposit system, faced disturbances in its launch. According to the minister, the main problems identified were the existence of litter on public streets and the lack of sufficient machines to operationalize the system effectively.
During her speech, Maria da Graça Carvalho revealed that Portugal spent 600 million euros in the last three years on non-recycled plastic. This value highlights the significant financial impact of the lack of efficient management of plastic waste in the country.
The Volta System was implemented with the objective of encouraging packaging recycling, but its initial phase has been marked by operational difficulties that have affected its effectiveness in the collection of recyclable materials.
