Jorge Bravo: 'We cannot assume the State Budget will have the capacity to cover the deficits'

SOL2 September 2026 at 07:58

Jorge Bravo, coordinator of the working group on Social Security Reform, warned about the growing pressure on public accounts. The main cause identified is the aging of the Portuguese population, which poses significant challenges to the Social Security system.

According to Jorge Bravo, increased employment and immigration are not enough to solve the long-term problems of the system. These measures can only partially mitigate the effects, but do not constitute a sustainable solution for the future.

The expert warned that we cannot assume the State Budget will always have the capacity to cover Social Security deficits. This situation raises questions about the financial viability of the system as it is currently structured.

In the future, maintaining State Budget transfers to Social Security may necessarily imply a tax increase, warned Jorge Bravo, emphasizing the need to find structural solutions to ensure the system's sustainability.
