A rural fire focus was recorded yesterday in the vicinity of Abreiro, in the municipality of Mirandela, bringing again to the forefront one of the main risks associated with agricultural work during periods of greatest fire danger: the use of machinery in the field.
The Voluntary Firefighters of Mirandela were mobilized for the occurrence and managed to extinguish the fire, in an intervention that prevented the flames from gaining greater dimension.
The occurrence serves as a warning for the need to reinforce precautions during agricultural work. In terrain with dry vegetation, a spark caused by the operation or contact of equipment with stones and metallic materials can be sufficient to trigger a fire.
The authorities and civil protection agents recommend that farmers check the rural fire risk beforehand before starting work, avoid equipment likely to produce sparks in areas with dry grass or stony terrain, and ensure that there are first response means, such as water, beaters, or suitable extinguishers, easily accessible.
