The Argentine international midfielder Enzo Fernández was signed by Manchester City from Chelsea for 146 million euros, in a transfer that became a record in Premier League history. The forward slightly surpassed Swedish Alexander Isak, transferred in 2025 from Newcastle to Liverpool for 145 million euros. The operation was completed on the last day of the summer transfer window, without the clubs specifying the amounts involved.
2022 World Cup champion for Argentina, Enzo Fernández, 25 years old, signed a five-season contract with the Citizens, until 2031. The Argentine leaves Chelsea more than three years after his departure from Benfica, the club for which he stood out before being sold to the Blues for 121 million euros in January 2023, the highest transfer ever from a Portuguese club.
Before arriving in the English League, Enzo made his senior debut for River Plate, was on loan at Defensa y Justicia and stood out for almost six months at Benfica. For the Argentine national team, he has 49 caps and eight goals, having won the 2024 Copa América and been named best young player of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The midfielder completes the reconstruction of Manchester City's midfield, which also welcomed Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, amid the departures of Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico González and Bernardo Silva. Italian coach Enzo Maresca will reunite with the player in Manchester, after having replaced Spanish Pep Guardiola in 2026. The English vice-champions face FC Porto and Sporting in the league phase of the Champions League.
