The Algarve has once again stood out internationally by taking second place among the best destinations in the world to live in retirement in 2026, according to the Overseas Retirement Index prepared by the organization Live and Invest Overseas. The Portuguese region comes only behind Boquete, in Panama, but ahead of well-known destinations in countries such as Spain, France, Mexico, Greece and Italy, surpassing locations like Puerto Vallarta, Gascony, Crete and Tarragona. The ranking was highlighted by Yahoo Finance, which analyzed the growing trend of North American retirees looking for other countries after leaving the workforce.
The study compares destinations through factors such as cost of living, health, safety, climate, taxes, infrastructure, residency conditions, real estate market and existence of foreign communities. Among the aspects most valued in the Algarve are the climate with about three thousand hours of sunshine per year, the existence of an international community already established there and the ease of communication in English. The combination of beaches, cities and smaller towns also contributes to the positive assessment of the region.
Live and Invest Overseas estimates a monthly budget of approximately 3,085 dollars for the lifestyle considered in the study, although costs can vary significantly depending on the chosen area, the type of housing and each person's habits. Portugal is presented as one of the most attractive European countries for foreigners and the Algarve appears as the main Portuguese representative in this international comparison.
The international interest in Portugal comes at a time when approximately 700 thousand people currently receive US Social Security benefits while residing abroad, a number that has increased by more than 20% in about 12 years. Portugal is among the countries where beneficiaries of this Social Security already live, along with destinations such as Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Greece and Spain. The cost of living, healthcare and the search for a different lifestyle are some of the reasons cited for this growing trend of retired Americans moving abroad.
