The Portuguese police PSP and GNR receive on average eight complaints per day of children assaulting parents, according to data for the first six months of this year. In total, 1,474 processes related to this type of domestic violence were opened in the period under analysis.
Women are the preferred target of aggressors in these cases. The data indicates that female victims are more frequently targeted than men in this context of family violence.
Violence between family members, including assaults by children against parents, is classified as domestic violence under Portuguese legislation. The figures now known reflect only cases officially reported to the authorities.
