Brampton, in Canada, will host a replica of the City Gates of Ponta Delgada, whose inauguration is planned for September. The announcement was made following the commemorative ceremony of the 20th anniversary of the City Gates in Fall River, in the United States of America.
The installation in Brampton follows the example of the monument already existing in Fall River, which completed two decades since its inauguration. This replica reinforces the connection between Azorean communities in the diaspora and the city of Ponta Delgada.
The City Gates are a symbolic monument of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, representing the identity and cultural heritage of the municipality. The inauguration of the replica in Brampton will allow the Portuguese community in Canada to also have access to this symbol of their homeland.
