Viseu now has free public transport for all residents of the municipality. The measure came into effect this Tuesday, January 21, 2025, representing one of the most significant changes in local mobility. This initiative makes Viseu one of the first Portuguese cities to implement a totally free transport network for its inhabitants. The Viseu city council, led by president Fernando de Sousa, had announced this measure as a priority in its government program. The stated objective is to promote sustainable mobility, reduce dependence on private cars and facilitate citizens' access to public services. The measure covers all residents in the council of Viseu, who can now use the municipal transport network at no cost. This Tuesday thus marked the beginning of a new era in the city's transport policy, which could serve as a model for other Portuguese municipalities.
