Pensão Serrano: when the landlord killed the guest and left him inside the room for months

Público1 September 2026 at 21:23

The case of Pensão Serrano refers to a crime that occurred at that guesthouse in Porto, where the landlord, a former seminarian, killed a guest. The motive was reportedly a debt that the guest was unable to pay, and the landlord did not forgive. The victim's body remained inside the room for months before being discovered.

The owner of the guesthouse ended up being arrested and serving a sentence, dying in prison in 2020. The case became known as one of the darkest episodes in the history of housing in downtown Porto.

Years later, the building of the former Pensão Serrano was acquired by the group responsible for the famous Livraria Lello, one of the most iconic stores in Portugal. The intention is to integrate the property into a broader real estate, cultural, and tourism project in the city.
