Nepal: collective burials of unidentified victims continue, one week after flash floods

Euronews Portugal2 September 2026 at 06:26

One week after flash floods in Nepal, collective burials of unidentified victims continue. The government revealed that it intended to carry out "temporary" collective burials of the deceased, which provoked public outrage and disapproval.

The Nepali community, predominantly Hindu, strongly opposed the measure, arguing that it goes against religious traditions. Hindu funeral rituals generally require individual cremation and separate burials, which makes collective burials unacceptable to many.

The government did not specify how many victims remain unidentified or how many families were affected by this controversial decision.
