Eighteen Americans were isolated for 42 days in a special facility in Nebraska, United States, after being exposed to hantavirus, a deadly virus, on the MV Hondius cruise ship. The outbreak occurred in May, in the middle of the Atlantic, with the ship being identified as the epicenter of the virus spread.
Survivors described the forced quarantine experience as traumatic. Over the weeks of isolation in Omaha, some people became increasingly aggressive, while others turned to alcohol as a form of emotional anesthesia.
There were also those who came close to a mental health crisis during the confinement period, highlighting the significant psychological impact that the prolonged quarantine had on those affected by the hantavirus outbreak.
