Portugal commemorated this Tuesday the 130 years of the first oceanography campaign carried out in the country, an expedition led by King Carlos I. The monarch, who was also a scientist and devoted much of his time to marine research, became known for his studies on life in the oceans.
The celebration of the anniversary served simultaneously as a historical milestone and as the launch of a new scientific campaign. The research vessel Mário Ruivo began an expedition that aims to continue the legacy left by King Carlos I 130 years ago.
