The Portuguese Navy coordinated, this Tuesday, a medical rescue of a 65-year-old man, Swiss national, on board the sailing yacht "Metanoia 2", with Swiss flag. The operation was carried out through the Funchal Sub-Center for Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination (MRSC Funchal).
The sailing yacht was navigating approximately 159 nautical miles, about 294 kilometres, northwest of Madeira Island, when it was necessary to activate the medical rescue. The crew requested assistance due to the passenger's health condition.
The Navy did not specify what was the medical emergency affecting the 65-year-old man. The rescue was coordinated from Funchal, capital of Madeira Island, which serves as the base for maritime search and rescue operations in the region.
This type of operation is common in the Atlantic area near Madeira, where recreational vessels and sailing yachts frequently pass through, sailing between Europe and other regions.
