Traffic signal cable theft in Rio has caused R$ 27 million in losses over five years; Méier and Tijuca are the most affected areas

Since 2021, almost 500 km of traffic signal cables and 488 controllers have been stolen in the city of Rio de Janeiro, causing R$ 27 million in losses over five years. The neighborhoods of Méier and Tijuca are the most affected areas by this type of crime.

Given this scenario, the Rio city government announced on Tuesday the creation of the Integrated Center for Combating Cable Theft and Receiving. The group is composed of municipal, state agencies and utility companies, with the objective of seeking solutions to combat this type of crime.

Among the center's proposals are identifying locations, times and patterns of thefts, mapping recurring occurrence points and identifying scrapyards and establishments that buy, store and sell stolen cables and other materials. The group also intends to collect the stolen material and expropriate it.

The center's actions will be coordinated by the Civil and Military Police, who will work together with the other participating agencies to deter the practice and hold accountable both the perpetrators of the thefts and those who trade the stolen materials.
