The Portuguese Navy, through the Funchal Maritime Rescue Coordination Sub-Centre (MRSC Funchal), coordinated on September 1st a medical rescue operation of a 65-year-old man, of Swiss nationality. The crew member was on board the sailing vessel "Metanoia 2", flying a Swiss flag, sailing approximately 159 nautical miles away.
The operation was carried out by a Merlin helicopter, which proceeded to rescue the crew member. The man was subsequently transported to shore, where he received appropriate medical assistance.
This mission falls within the competencies of the Portuguese Navy in matters of maritime search and rescue, an area in which MRSC Funchal plays a fundamental role in coordinating emergency operations off the coast of Madeira.
