Gabriel Mendes Bernartt, 24 years old, had his preventive detention ordered after an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio de Janeiro into crimes committed on social media. The MPRJ states that he used WhatsApp groups and other platforms to carry out racist and xenophobic attacks, harass women, and incite gender-based violence.
The investigation began after a student reported racist insults she received in a WhatsApp group linked to the academic community of a federal university in Volta Redonda. As the investigations progressed and data records were accessed, investigators identified that this was not an isolated incident, finding other messages with racist attacks and expressions of hatred attributed to Gabriel.
Among the material analyzed, there was a message in which the defendant stated that raping a certain person would be a "duty." Investigators also found images of dead and mutilated animals.
