Portuguese Navy saves more than 300 lives in the first eight months of the year

Diário de Aveiro1 September 2026 at 18:05

The Portuguese Navy announced it had saved more than 300 lives during the first eight months of the year, through its maritime rescue operations. This number represents a significant milestone in the institution's rescue activity over the period under analysis.

Most rescue occurrences were recorded in the Lisbon area, which concentrated the highest volume of operations. This coastal region, with intense port traffic and maritime activities, has been consistently one of the areas with the highest frequency of incidents requiring intervention.

The Navy delegations in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, and in Funchal, in Madeira, recorded a combined 14 rescue operations during this period. These data demonstrate the comprehensive coverage that the Navy maintains throughout Portuguese territory, both on the mainland and in the autonomous regions.

The balance presented by the Portuguese Navy highlights the fundamental role of this armed force in sea security and rescue operations, responding to emergency situations involving both human lives and vessels in distress along the national coast.
