Roberta Ghiotto, a woman with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was dismissed from a five-star hotel after having been placed to work in a windowless closet. The labour court considered that the employer acted in a discriminatory manner and that she was set up to fail. The judicial decision ordered the hotel to pay her compensation of more than 230 thousand euros. The case occurred in Italy and drew attention to inadequate labour practices directed at workers with special needs. The sentence recognized that placing Ghiotto in that space and the imposed working conditions constituted a form of discriminatory harassment. This trial may serve as a precedent for similar cases of discrimination in the workplace against people with neurodevelopmental disorders.
