The automobile market in Portugal continued to grow in August, with new vehicle sales accelerating 10.3% through the end of the month, according to data from ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal. A total of 197,632 new vehicles were put into circulation, a 10.3% increase over the same period last year. In August alone, 17,209 vehicles were registered, a growth of 11.3% compared to the same month in 2025.
In the passenger car segment, 169,323 units were registered in the first eight months of the year, a 9.5% increase compared to 2025. Cars powered by alternative energies represented 75.6% of the total, with electric vehicles reaching a market share of 26.8%. In August alone, the percentage of electric vehicles rose to 36%. Petrol cars represented 20.8% of new units and diesel cars only 3.6%.
In light commercial vehicles, sales grew 21.8% in August, with 2,449 units registered. Year-to-date, the market reached 22,299 units, a 9.8% increase over the same period last year.
As for the best-selling models, the Peugeot 2008 remains the sales champion, followed by the Peugeot 208 and the Citroën C3. The Tesla Model ranks fourth, with 3,719 units registered since the beginning of the year.
