Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia will invest 25 million euros in the construction of five renewable biomethane production units, with the financial support of Crédito Agrícola. This project will enable the first large-scale injection of this gas into the National Gas Network and is supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The units will be installed in Coimbra and Aveiro, through ERSUC, in Leiria by Valorlis, in Seixal by Amarsul, and in Amadora by Valorsul. The projects are expected to become operational by the end of 2026, with a combined capacity to produce up to 170 gigawatt-hours of biomethane per year, from the recovery of approximately 600 thousand tons of annual biodegradable urban waste.
The investment should avoid the emission of approximately 50 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, through the recovery of methane from the organic fraction of waste and reduced use of fossil-origin natural gas. The CEO of Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia, Hugo Pereira, stated that the project represents a significant milestone for renewable gas production in Portugal.
The company is also developing a second wave of five biomethane production projects, planned for the period between 2027 and 2030, with the goal of achieving production capacity close to 500 GWh annually.
