A canine unit from the Guarda Nacional Republicana, based in Viseu, was deployed for a mission in Spain. The team specializes in drug, weapons and currency detection.
The mission takes place in Algeciras, a Spanish city located in the Andalusia region, next to the Strait of Gibraltar. This strategic location is frequently used as a crossing point for cross-border enforcement operations.
The team is on the ground under the JO MINERVA 2026 mission. This operation involves cooperation between security authorities from different countries, aiming to combat drug trafficking and other illegal activities in the border area between Spain and Portugal.
The GNR regularly deploys canine units on international missions, taking advantage of the capability of these police-dog binomials to detect substances and illicit objects at crossing points and border zones.
