Algarve companies can now assess their sustainability performance

Jornal do Algarve1 September 2026 at 15:54

Small and medium-sized companies in the Algarve can now assess their environmental, energy and sustainability performance through the new Barómetro PME + Sustentável (SME Barometer + Sustainable), a free online tool that allows identifying strengths and areas for improvement. The barometer works as a self-assessment tool, allowing companies to obtain a diagnosis of their environmental and energy maturity level, and can also compare their results with those of companies in the same sector.

The tool aims to support the definition of strategies and decision-making related to ESG practices — environmental, social and governance. The project also provides a website with information about the initiatives developed, resources and content related to decarbonisation and business sustainability.

The Barómetro PME + Sustentável was developed as part of the Descarbonizar + Algarve project, which is co-financed by the Regional Programme Algarve 2030, under Portugal 2030. The project is developed in co-promotion by NERA – Business Association of the Algarve Region, the Algarve Tourism Region and AREAL – Regional Energy and Environment Agency of the Algarve.

The initiative is part of the regional strategy for energy transition and decarbonisation of companies, seeking to support the Algarve business community in adopting more sustainable practices and raising awareness about the challenges of decarbonisation and the energy transition.

Lisbon escapes European losses with energy sector boost

European markets recorded significant declines due to the worsening conflict in the Middle East and expectations of new interest rate hikes driven by high inflation. However, the Portuguese stock index managed to escape these losses and remained in positive territory, driven by the strong performance of Galp shares and the EDP group, which compensated for the risk aversion climate observed in continental markets.
