Public debt falls to 286,300 ME in July

Portuguese public debt under the Maastricht criteria decreased significantly in July, falling by approximately 7.55 billion euros. This value represents the debt that is considered for the purposes of the European Union and Brussels budgetary rules.

According to data released by the Bank of Portugal, the debt value stood at 286.34 billion euros at the end of July. This reduction represents a significant decline compared to the previous month.

The Bank of Portugal is the entity responsible for the compilation and dissemination of these statistics on Portuguese public debt. The figures are part of the regular reporting on the evolution of the Portuguese economy to European authorities.

Energy purchases from Spain break records

Portugal never bought so much electricity from Spain as in August, with 36% of national consumption supplied by the neighboring country, reaching a historic maximum of 5,200 MW after the reinforcement of the electrical interconnection in Minho. Renewable energies supplied more than 50% of consumption, with solar reaching a new record of 3,850 MW, although wind and solar production was lower on a monthly basis. In the first eight months of the year, renewables represented 66% of consumption, while purchases from Spain totaled 20%. In natural gas, consumption fell 12% in August, with Nigeria and the United States being the main suppliers.
