Medieval Market returns to Valença Fortress

Alto Minho TV1 September 2026 at 15:21

The Fortress of Valença transforms, between September 4th and 6th, into a medieval setting with the holding of the Medieval Market. Streets and spaces of the historic center will be occupied by merchants, artisans, musicians, knights and medieval characters, inviting visitors on a journey through the history and identity of the territory.

This year's edition has as its central theme the presence of Duarte de Armas in Valença, in 1509. Squire of the House of King Manuel I, Duarte de Armas traveled, by royal command, the fortresses of the border, recording through drawings and plans their state and configuration. Valença was one of the strongholds represented in the famous Book of Fortresses.

The three-day program includes crafts, traditional arts and trades, dances, music, theater and gastronomy. The entertainment also features fire shows and foot and mounted tournaments, recreating different dimensions of medieval life and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

The Medieval Market promises to transform the fortification into a living stage of the past, providing three days of historical reenactment and celebration of Valencian identity.
