The MapQuest application refused to change the name of Lake Mead to "Lake America" as proposed by Donald Trump, stating "We're not changing it." This stance by the 30-year-old application caused its downloads to skyrocket in recent weeks.
The application became the number one among navigation apps in the Apple App Store. Hundreds of thousands of people downloaded MapQuest in recent days, propelling it to the top of the navigation app rankings.
According to Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch, in the week starting August 24, the application registered about 184 thousand downloads worldwide, of which 162 thousand in the United States. In both cases, it represented more than ten times more than the previous period.
This phenomenon illustrates how an apparently small decision by a tech company can generate a significant impact on a product's popularity, with users expressing their support for MapQuest's position through an exponential increase in downloads.
