The Transhumance Festival takes place on September 12 and 13 in Serra da Estrela, celebrating the centuries-old tradition of this pastoral practice. The event is organized as part of the celebrations of Fernão Joanes, a historical character linked to the region.
The program includes a walk with a flock of about a thousand animals, recreating the traditional route that shepherds made between the lowlands and the high-altitude pastures. This activity allows participants to experience firsthand the routine of transhumant herds.
In addition to the walk, the festival offers various traditional experiences that aim to preserve and showcase the way of life of the shepherds of Serra da Estrela. Visitors can participate in activities characteristic of this rural culture.
One of the most distinctive components of the event is the possibility of spending a night in old shepherd's huts, allowing a complete immersion in the transhumant tradition and life on the mountain.
