Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian said Iran will immediately return to its commitments if the United States returns to the memorandum of understanding signed in June to end the war in the Middle East. The declaration was made at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan.
The memorandum of understanding aimed at a definitive end to the war between Tehran and Washington, which began in late February with airstrikes by the US and Israel against the Islamic Republic. The agreement collapsed in July, with both sides accusing each other of violating its terms.
Pezeshkian's statements come at a time when the Strait of Hormuz continues to be an important point of discord. Iran maintains the closure of this strategic waterway but says it will reopen it if the United States does the same and returns to the commitments made.
On Monday, Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi had already stated that the United States must return to its commitments and to what its president signed under the agreement. The exchange of fire between the two countries resumed on Monday, after a month of relative calm.
