Iran admits returning to June ceasefire agreement if US does the same

Euronews Portugal1 September 2026 at 15:16

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kazakhstan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian admitted that Iran can return to the ceasefire agreement reached in June, provided the United States does the same.

The proposal came just hours after an exchange of fire between Iran and the United States, raising tensions between the two countries at that time.

Pezeshkian used the international platform of the summit to make this announcement, attempting to create a path for de-escalation of the conflict.

However, the demands made by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, which include control of the Strait of Hormuz and war reparations, are considered unlikely to be accepted by Washington, which raises doubts about the viability of a new agreement.
