A few days before the start of the school year, the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) points out that there are 2,650 teaching positions still to be filled in Portugal. Of this total, 2,152 correspond to full-time and annual positions, meaning full-time roles for the entire school year.
The situation is considered more concerning in the Lisbon region, where 1,426 available positions are concentrated. The districts of Setúbal and Faro follow as the areas most affected by the lack of teachers. In the first cycle of basic education, 378 full-time positions remain unoccupied.
Fenprof warns that if classes started right now, thousands of students would be left without a teacher. The union organization expresses concern about the ability to resolve this teacher shortage before the effective start of the school year activities.
