The European Union announced it will suspend starting Thursday the importation of beef and poultry from Brazil. The European Commission made this decision because Brazil did not present sufficient guarantees regarding the compliance of its products with European rules against the abusive use of antibiotics in the livestock industry. The suspension also covers eggs and honey.
The announcement was made on Monday, the 31st, by the European Executive. The European Commission stated it awaits Brazilian guarantees regarding compliance with the bloc's sanitary standards to resume imports.
A European Commission spokesperson stated that Brazil is an important EU partner and that they are working closely, constructively, and positively with Brazilian authorities to ensure compliance with European requirements. Once such compliance is demonstrated, exports may be resumed.
Brussels did not wish to provide a timeline for the resumption of Brazilian imports. The trade conflict occurs at a time of diplomatic tension between Brazil and European countries.
