Five years after the elimination of tolls on the AP-7 in Catalunya, the balance sheet presents mixed results. Between January and August 2026, fatalities on the Catalan road network decreased 26.2% compared to 2019, and serious injuries fell by 9.1%.
In contrast, on the roads where the toll barriers disappeared, serious injuries doubled in the same period. This increase is directly linked to the strong increase in mobility that these highways absorbed since they became free.
The elimination of tolls on the AP-7 caused a massive transfer of traffic to these roads, which, although it did not negatively impact the general road safety statistics of the region, created a more dangerous situation specifically on the sections affected by the measure.
