Portuguese public debt decreased by 7.6 billion euros in August, representing a significant fiscal relief for the country. The reduction was recorded following the repayment of a Treasury bond issuance made in 2016.
The Bank of Portugal released the data for this period, confirming that Portugal achieved a significant decrease in the total value of public debt during the month of August.
The repayment of the Treasury bond line issued in 2016 was the main factor responsible for the reduction in public debt. This payment allowed for a substantial relief of the Portuguese State's liabilities.
Contrary to the debt relief, the costs associated with savings certificates increased, which represented a factor opposing the overall downward trend in public debt recorded during that period.
