Inflation accelerates in August driven by fuels

Diário de Leiria1 September 2026 at 10:30

Inflation accelerated in Portugal in the month of August, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute. The year-on-year rate of the Consumer Price Index rose to 3.3%, reflecting a significant increase compared to previous months.

INE indicates that the increase in energy product prices explains almost entirely this acceleration of inflation. Fuels were the main responsible for the rise in prices during this period.

This worsening occurs in a context where energy prices have been exerting pressure on the Portuguese and European economy, affecting the cost of living for families. The acceleration of inflation may have implications for economic policy and for the decisions of the European Central Bank regarding interest rates.

Farmer reveals how much he receives for tomatoes that cost up to 3 euros in the supermarket: difference surprises

A Spanish farmer, Juan Carlos, revealed that he receives around one euro per kilo of tomatoes, while the same product costs between 2.50 and 3 euros on supermarket shelves. The price difference along the food chain has been one of the main complaints of the agricultural sector in Spain, which faces growing production costs, adverse weather conditions, and competition from imported products. Although there is a Food Chain Law in Spain aimed at preventing sales below production cost, farmers argue that greater control and more effective enforcement of the rules are needed to ensure a fairer distribution of value throughout the entire chain.
