New Gloria Elevator Only in 2029 — and Design, Price, and Accident Report Still Missing

ZAP Notícias1 September 2026 at 08:30

Carris expects the Elevador da Glória, in Lisbon, to return to service only in 2029, almost five years after the accident that led to its suspension. The company promises a completely new and safer installation, with a "new system" that will guarantee "all safety" to users.

However, the project is still in a very preliminary phase. The technical system has not been finalized, there is no definitive design, and the cost of the intervention remains unknown. The international public design competition that will decide much of the solution is expected to be launched only by the end of March 2027.

The Elevador da Glória has been suspended since mid-2024, when an accident occurred that led to the opening of an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office. Carris guarantees that the new equipment will be completely different from the original, but acknowledges that many details still need to be defined before the competition opens and the subsequent awarding of the contract.
