Trump wants Apple to adopt "Lake America" after order to change Lake Ontario's name

Expresso1 September 2026 at 09:07

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the name change of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" and pressured Apple to adopt this new designation in the Maps application. The pressure came just days after Trump officially decreed the name change through an executive order.

The measure immediately drew criticism from Canada, which considers Lake Ontario part of its territory and national heritage. Indigenous communities in the region also expressed opposition to the name change, arguing that the change devalues their history and the traditional designations of native peoples.

Trump's demand that Apple implement the change in the Maps app represents an effort to globalize the new name, leveraging the enormous user base of the American technology company. This is not the first time Trump has attempted to impose changes on technology companies, although this is one of the most unusual in terms of geographic and diplomatic impact.

Tehran promises to return to commitments if US restores agreement

The Iranian President, Massoud Pezeshkian, declared that Iran will immediately return to its commitments under the memorandum of understanding to end the war in the Middle East, if the United States returns to its commitments. The agreement, signed in June, collapsed in July with mutual accusations of violation. Pezeshkian highlighted that Tehran maintains the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway, but is willing to reopen this route and resume its obligations if Washington does the same. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, had already made similar statements, saying that "everything can return to normal" if the US returns to what its president signed.
