After the so-called "salmon DNA" gained ground in beauty products and procedures, sardine is starting to appear as the newest skincare bet on social media. The trend, dubbed "sardine skincare," follows the movement of valuing marine-derived actives and draws attention for its promise to incorporate into skincare routines substances associated with benefits for the skin.
Celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian have driven similar trends in recent times. Kylie Jenner's "jelly" product went viral on social media, as did procedures involving salmon DNA that became a craze among well-known figures.
More than the origin of the component, the popularization of fish exposes a recurring behavior in the beauty universe: the rise of new actives capable of sparking curiosity and fueling the search for results such as firmness, luminosity, and a younger appearance.
The speed at which these trends spread on social media, however, does not always keep pace with the provision of adequate information about the safety and efficacy of these ingredients.
