Forest fires in Spain have consumed more than 297,000 hectares since the beginning of the year, according to data released this Friday by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). This figure represents 48.1% of the total hectares burned across the entire European Union, which places Spain as the most affected country by fires in the community bloc. MITECO also reported that 43 large fires were recorded in Spanish territory during this period.

A South Korean police officer identified by the surname Bu was arrested on Jeju Island after confessing to closing missing persons cases without conducting necessary investigations simply to avoid additional work. According to Jeju Provincial Police, he falsified at least two high-profile cases and provided false information to victims' families. Bu is accused of falsification of electronic public records, obstruction of official work, and negligence in the performance of duty. Police believe he may have prematurely closed another 25 cases, some of which the missing persons were found alive and safe.
