A South Korean police officer, identified by the surname Bu, was arrested after admitting to closing missing persons cases without conducting necessary investigations, simply to avoid additional work. The arrest was confirmed by the Jeju Provincial Police, which is conducting the investigation into the case.
According to authorities, Bu falsified at least two high-profile cases on the tourist island of Jeju and provided false information to victims' families. He is accused of falsification of electronic public records, obstruction of official work, and negligence in the performance of duty.
Police believe the officer may have prematurely closed another 25 cases in addition to the two already confirmed. In some of these cases, the missing persons were eventually found alive and safe, which shows that the investigations could have been conducted properly.
During the interrogation, Bu stated that he considered some of the cases unimportant. The investigation continues to determine the full extent of the irregularities committed by the police officer.
