Psychological therapy improves physical and mental recovery after back surgery, according to a study

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General1 September 2026 at 06:29

A study indicates that psychological therapy improves physical and mental recovery after spinal surgery. The article presents the case of Montse Prat Maresma as an example of the difficulties faced by patients with spinal problems.

Montse Prat Maresma reached a point where she couldn't put on her socks by herself. She slept only four hours at a time, the painkillers had damaged her stomach, and she was afraid to go outside because of the shooting pains that made her look for a bench to sit on.

A gardener by profession and accustomed to an active life, Montse saw her daily life completely affected. She couldn't perform simple tasks like putting in the washing machine, feeling useless.

Given the intensity of the suffering, she even thought she would rather come out of the operation in a wheelchair than continue to endure that pain.
