A 49-year-old woman, who suffered from mental health problems, randomly stabbed two people on Monday in Times Square, a tourist area of New York. The woman killed one of the victims with the knife and seriously injured another person before being neutralized by police.
The officers who responded to the incident ended up shooting the woman at the scene. The identity of the attacker was not immediately released by New York authorities.
Authorities indicated that the attack was carried out randomly, without any connection between the woman and her victims. Times Square, one of the most frequented spots in New York, was briefly suspended after the incident.
Security forces continue to investigate the full circumstances of the attack, including the motives that led the woman to select her victims in an apparently random manner in that busy area of the city.
