Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo appointed this Monday, August 31, Waldemar Fernando de Sousa for the position of Governor of the Bank of Mozambique. The appointment was announced through a statement from the Presidency, which detailed the duties of the position, including the presidency of the Board of Directors, the representation of the institution before the Government and before national, foreign, and international bodies.
In the same decision, the Head of State appointed Felisberto Dinis Navalha as vice-president of the institution. The statement highlighted that the vice-president replaces the governor in his absences or impediments, also exercising the powers assigned or delegated to him under the law.
Waldemar Fernando de Sousa succeeds Rogério Zandamela, who led that public institution for ten years. The inauguration of the appointees is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1.
The Bank of Mozambique is described as one of the structuring institutions of the Economic Independence strategy, playing a central role in monetary and financial stability, including the direction of monetary and exchange rate policies and the supervision of financial institutions.
